Internal Hole Wall Surface Finish & Serration Grooves
The internal surface finish of each tube hole plays a pivotal role in achieving a leak-tight mechanical bond when heat exchanger tubes are expanded. Surface roughness inside the hole bore must fall within standard design limits—typically Ra 1.6 to 3.2 micrometers. If the wall is too smooth, mechanical friction during tube expansion may be insufficient to prevent tube pull-out under axial pressure loads; if it is too rough, micro-ridges can create spiral leak paths for high-pressure fluids. When design specifications require annular serration grooves—typically two small concentric rings machined inside the hole bore—inspectors utilize specialized optical borescopes or groove gages to confirm correct groove depth, width, edge sharpness, and longitudinal position.
